It was a beautiful warm sunny day to start the
15th Annual FOR-VT "Christmas in August" Toy Run at the Berlin airport in
central Vermont. Hundreds of motorcycles lined the runway with toys of all
kinds strapped on ready to go for a ride. The bikers arrive early to have time
for visiting with friends and to buy the commemorative T-Shirts and patches. A
local charity was also selling raffle tickets for a new Harley Davidson
motorcycle. |

The long procession was led by the police and
Santa Claus himself riding in an open convertible. Motorists stopped and joined
the local towns people along the route to wave and cheer the bikers on.
Children were sitting on their parent's shoulders and cars were tooting their
horns as the parade of bikers made their way to the statehouse in Montpelier.
There they would donate the toys to The Shriners to be distributed to various
New England Children's Hospitals. |
This ride is well organized with police directing
traffic at every intersection. A weekend long party starts right after the
ride.
There are many other New England charity rides.
But, this toy run is by far the most scenic. The views from the 360 degree
panoramic vista at the airport to the Green Mountain backdrop along the highway
are all breath-taking. Mark your calendars. The FOR-VT Toy Run is scheduled for
the 3rd Saturday in August each year.
