Effie and I have been riding together for years. First, she rode with me on my bike. Later, she got her own bike (a 1985 Honda 450 Nighthawk) and we took a Motorcycle Safety Foundation rider's course together. Now, we ride all over the place together on our Harleys. When she heard Len say that he'd ridden in every state east of the Mississippi, she thought it would be fun to set a goal to do the same. Here, you can see our progress...

In the last 15 months, I've been on 4 different long rides (2,000 miles or more)... Effie joined me on 2 of the rides and Bobby went with me on 3 of them.

• For the 1st time, Effie joined me on a long ride when I attended the Harley newsgroup's annual gathering in Illinois known as Meet In The Middle.

• Rapidly gaining in popularity, Daytona's relatively new autumn gathering of bikers is held in late October when even those of us living in the snow belt can safely ride down to Florida.

• For sixty years, Motorcyclists have gathered in the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota for a week of fun and riding in The Black Hills. Since this event is held in August, there isn't much of an excuse for not riding out there (that is if you truly enjoy riding).

• Every year on the 3rd weekend in August, bikers from all over New England gather in central VT to donate toys for the Shriner's Children's Hospitals.
